Abstract: This paper presents the evolution of spaces for the treatment of people with mental disorders and analyzes the role of architecture, from the viewpoint of Environmental Psychology, as a stimulus for this treatment and promotion of the physical and emotional well-being of the subjects. Initially, we examine the advances in the understanding of madness and the treatment of mental disorders throughout history and how these changes have been imprinted on the architecture of psychiatric establishments. Next, we discuss how architectural elements and the design of spaces can influence the behavior and rehabilitation of these individuals. Aspects such as daylighting, sounds, access to green spaces, privacy, and colors, among others, are analyzed from the perspective of Environmental Psychology, showing that a well-designed environment can provide the necessary stimuli to patients and help to improve their clinical condition. We hope to encourage discussions and reflections about the integration of Environmental Psychology into healthcare architecture, as well as the establishment of a continuous dialog between architects, psychologists, and healthcare professionals to create treatment environments that meet the specific needs of this population.
