Unveiling the Digital Disruption–Productivity Nexus: A Bibliometric Synthesis of Social Media Addiction, Cyberloafing, and Employee Performance

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study delivers a pioneering bibliometric synthesis that systematically maps the intellectual landscape at the intersection of employee productivity, social media addiction, and cyberloafing over the period 2000-2024. Drawing from 1,426 peer-reviewed articles indexed in Scopus, we employ an integrated toolchain comprising Bibliometrix (R), VOSviewer, and thematic Sankey mapping to uncover structural patterns, thematic shifts, and emerging research trajectories. The results reveal three major intellectual clusters: (1) techno-behavioral antecedents of cyberloafing, (2) psychosocial mechanisms underlying digital addiction, and (3) organizational responses focused on digital well-being and hybrid work. A notable thematic evolution is observed-from early concerns with internet misuse to contemporary debates around digital wellness and the productivity paradox in post-pandemic work environments. The study highlights critical research gaps, including limited multi-level modeling, underrepresentation of non-Western contexts, and fragmented integration of digital behavior with productivity outcomes. By consolidating disciplinary silos across psychology, information systems, and organizational behavior, this review proposes a forward-looking research agenda and offers evidence-based managerial implications to foster ethically grounded, digitally balanced, and high-performing workplaces.
