Abstract: This study investigates how novice programmers maintain social interactions during collaborative debugging.A qualitative case study was conducted with five undergraduate students working in small groups on debugging tasks.Recordings from 12 sessions were analyzed.Findings from our thematic analysis show that social interactions function as both emotional regulation tools and collaborative resources, helping group members manage tension, sustain engagement, and maintain group cohesion.Humor and playfulness particularly supported a positive and productive debugging atmosphere.
