Code and data for a bibliometric analysis of the International Journal of Remote Sensing
Year: 2026
Type: software
Abstract: This repository contains the code used to analyse the scientific footprint, geographic representation, thematic evolution, and competitive position of the International Journal of Remote Sensing (IJRS) within the broader Remote Sensing literature. The analysis uses bibliographic metadata from OpenAlex and covers IJRS publications from 2000 to 2026, with comparative analyses based primarily on complete publication years through 2025. Country-level analyses are based on author institutional affiliations rather than nationality. The workflow includes: (i) mapping the global scientific footprint of IJRS; (ii) calculating a Representation Index that compares each country's share of IJRS publications with its share of global Remote Sensing output; (iii) assessing changes in geographic representation between 2010–2017 and 2018–2025; (iv) comparing publication trajectories among major Remote Sensing journals; (v) analysing global thematic growth and changes in IJRS penetration across research areas; and (vi) estimating journal specialization relative to the global thematic baseline. The comparative journal set includes GIScience & Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Remote Sensing, Remote Sensing of Environment, and IJRS.The repository is intended to provide a transparent and reproducible record of the analyses and figures derived from publicly available bibliographic metadata.Data source: OpenAlex Main analysis period: 2000–2026 Comparative periods: 2010–2017 and 2018–2025 Note: 2026 represents a partial publication year and is not used to infer recent growth trends.
