Studies on the impact of a soft elastic infill on the mechanical properties and synergy effect of double-arrowhead honeycomb composites
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: An experimental study was conducted on a composite double-arrowhead auxetic honeycomb structure filled with five types of soft elastic matrices. The study also presents the results of tests performed on empty double-arrowhead honeycomb structures as well as on the soft elastic materials used as the filling for the cellular structures. The research focused on the effect of the infill on the mechanical properties of the structure. In addition, the influence of the infill on the synergy effect and the auxetic properties of the composite was determined. Filling the double-arrowhead structure with soft elastic matrices led to increase in both structural stability and plateau value of up to 700%, indicating a positive synergy effect. This translates to an increase in the energy absorption (EA) up to 702%. However, a positive synergy effect in terms of specific energy absorption (SEA) within the useful range was only achieved in one case, with an improvement of 324%.
