Abstract: This study systematically investigated oyster shell-derived CaCO 3 templating method as a novel approach to construct hierarchically porous structures on coffee waste-based carbonaceous adsorbents (CCA). The feasibility of oyster shell-derived CaCO 3 templating method was evaluated by comparing the adsorption of levofloxacin (LEV) by CCA, oyster shell-embedded CCA (OS@CCA), and CCA with hierarchically porous structures (CCA-HP). CCA-HP exhibited the highest specific surface area of micropores and the most excellent hierarchically porous structures among CCA, OS@CCA, and CCA-HP, leading to the greatest adsorption capacity for LEV. These results demonstrate that oyster shell-derived CaCO 3 templating was effective in constructing hierarchically porous structures on CCA. Based on experimental results, the adsorption behavior of LEV was governed by chemisorption and intra-particle diffusion occurring spontaneously and endothermically on monolayer adsorption sites of CCA, OS@CCA, and CCA-HP. Their major adsorption mechanisms of LEV were pore-filling effects with the minor involvement of π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions, hydrogen bonding, and ligand exchange. Moreover, CCA-HP maintained the reuse efficiency for the adsorption of LEV up to 66.3% during 10 adsorption-desorption cycles and exhibited robust LEV adsorption performance even in real water matrices. Hence, CCA-HP is a potential candidate for removing LEV from real water matrices.
