A systematic review of AI assisted SCAPS 1D modeling for hydrophilic degradation analysis and efficiency retention in perovskite solar cells

Year: 2026

Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Power conversion efficiency (PCE) is no longer a key bottleneck to address in Perovskite Solar Cells (PSCs). Challenges related to long-term stability, degradation pathways, and hydrophilic behavior of the material have emerged as the critical limitations, stopping perovskite’s commercialization. This review critically examines the prior state–of–the–art results using the PRISMA technique to systematically evaluate the relationship between hydrophilicity and time-dependent PCE decay. This review methodology ensures transparent and reproducible literature selection using 105 distinct studies integrating SCAPS-1D modeling and AI-based optimization frameworks to identify the intrinsic hydrophilic nature of organic–inorganic halide perovskites and their direct impact on PCE retention and long–term operational stability of PSCs. Nevertheless, critical gaps, persist including limited time-resolved ageing datasets, insufficient humidity-dependent defect modeling, and discrepancies between simulation-based predictions and real-world device performance. This work highlights the crucial need to switch the benchmarking criteria from efficiency-centric toward stability-normalized retention metrics. It proposes a unified conceptual hybrid SCAPS–AI roadmap for moisture-aware device design. While SCAPS–1D exhibits high theoretical efficiencies for Pb-based and Pb-free absorbers, AI–frameworks significantly enhance parameter sensitivity analysis and predictive optimization. This retention-centric approach provides a pathway toward environmentally resilient, scalable, and commercialization-ready perovskite photovoltaic (PV) technologies.
