Response of vegetation to extreme climate events in the Mongolian Plateau based on Event Synchronization

Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Under global warming conditions, the frequent outbreaks of extreme climate events pose a serious threat to the vegetation ecosystem on the Mongolian Plateau. Based on remote sensing observation datasets that characterize vegetation growth status, this study adopts the Event Synchronization (ES) approach and innovatively puts forward the Conditional Event Synchronization (CES) method. Considering a 1-month time lag at the monthly scale, we analyse the synchronous correlations between four types of single and compound extreme climate events and vegetation high/low growth during the growing seasons from 2012 to 2021. The results show that there is significant spatial heterogeneity in the synchronization between extreme climates and vegetation growth, with distinct impacts of different extreme events on regional vegetation, jointly regulated by vegetation types and environmental conditions. Compound extreme events exert more prominent promoting or stressful effects. This study reveals the response mechanism of vegetation to extreme climates, providing a scientific basis for regional ecological protection. It also emphasizes that the time lag between climate forcing and vegetation growth responses should be incorporated into vegetation dynamic projections to avoid underestimating the lagged risks of climate impacts.
