Calibration of pyrometer temperature in spark plasma sintering using metal melting markers
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Accurate control of the specimen temperature remains a major challenge in spark plasma sintering, since pyrometer readings on graphite tooling often deviate from the true sample temperature. A combined experimental approach was developed using simultaneous thermocouple measurements inside the die and independent calibration by melting of high-purity Cu, Co and Ti. Experiments performed on a Haoyue SPS apparatus with an AlN isolation layer established a strong linear correlation between the internal temperature and the outer-die pyrometer reading up to 1700 °C. The temperature offset increased with process temperature, while no significant difference was observed between dielectric (Al 2 O 3 ) and conductive (WC) powders, indicating predominant current flow through the graphite tooling. The proposed methodology provides a practical tool for reliable temperature determination in SPS.
