rpic: the pic picture-drawing language, reimplemented in Rust
Year: 2026
Type: software
Abstract: rpic is a modern, SVG/PNG/PDF-first reimplementation of Brian W. Kernighan's pic picture-drawing language, written in pure Rust with no system dependencies. It ships a native circuit-element library in the spirit of J. D. Aplevich's circuit_macros, natively typeset TeX math labels, structured compiler diagnostics, a declarative animation layer, and bindings for Python, JavaScript/WebAssembly and C; an R package is maintained in the companion repository milkway/rpic-r. Documentation and a live playground: rpic.dev.
