Abstract: In contemporary approaches to foreign-language teaching, assessment is increasingly viewed not merely as a record of what a learner has achieved, but as a mechanism that steers subsequent learning; this makes the development of learners’ self-assessment competence in English lessons particularly relevant. The purpose of this article is to systematise the theoretical and methodological approaches to developing this competence and to propose an improved technology for embedding it into the lesson’s formative assessment system. The study draws on theoretical and comparative analysis, synthesis of the research literature, and pedagogical modelling; the source base comprises 17 scholarly publications from 2009 to 2025, including the CEFR Companion Volume (Council of Europe, 2020) and Presidential Decree No. PQ-5117 of the Republic of Uzbekistan (19 May 2021). Self-assessment is treated here not as a mere act of assigning oneself a score, but as a four-stage metacognitive process comprising grasping the criteria, gathering evidence of one’s own performance, calibrating personal judgment against external feedback, and planning subsequent learning steps. Based on the analysis, the author proposes the MATR model (Criterion-Action-Analysis-Development), with tools adapted to speaking, writing, reading and listening. In addition, a calibration indicator (K) and a four-component (criterial literacy, evidencing, calibration, developmental action) indicator rubric with four levels (0–3 points per component) are proposed to track the gap between a learner’s self-rating and a teacher’s or expert’s rating over time. The proposed technology is designed to develop learner autonomy, reflection, assessment literacy and communicative competence in an interconnected way; being theoretical-methodological in nature, the model still requires empirical validation, which constitutes a task for further experimental research.
