Non-catalytic Highly Selective Olefin Production from Complex Hydrocarbons via Pulsed Joule Heating

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Keywords: Joule heating; Complex hydrocarbon mixtures; Light olefins; Spatiotemporal reactor; Reaction-separation mechanism Introduction Light olefins are essential building blocks for the chemical industry, and expanding their production from diverse hydrocarbon mixtures is important for improving resource utilization and securing olefin supply. Complex carbonaceous resources, including waste plastics, petroleum, and coal liquefaction products, represent abundant feedstocks for light olefin production. Industrially, light olefins are produced mainly through steam cracking and catalytic pyrolysis.1, 2, 3 These processes rely heavily on fossil fuel combustion for heat supply, resulting in high energy consumption and carbon emissions.4 It poses a major challenge to the low-carbon transition of olefin production technology. Thus, developing low-carbon heat supply strategies while maintaining high olefin selectivity is critical for next-generation olefin production technologies.
