Educational excursions as a project-based activity in teaching Russian as a foreign language in higher education: a case study of Irkutsk
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The study aims to identify the didactic potential of an educational excursion organized as a project-based activity in teaching Russian as a foreign language at the university level. The article describes an educational project-excursion designed to foster students’ sociocultural competence through immersion in a natural language environment and familiarity with the cultural realities of Irkutsk. The study identifies key functions of the project-excursion: educational, activating, adaptive, informational, team-building, formative, and developmental. The paper delineates and characterizes the stages of project-based activity within excursion-based learning: motivational-target, preparatory (research), execution (practical), and reflective-evaluative. Structured around these stages, a project-based excursion through the city center of Irkutsk was developed and conducted. The scientific novelty lies in adapting and providing a step-by-step description of an educational project-based excursion for first-year undergraduate students at Baikal State University. The results demonstrate that student recognition of Irkutsk landmarks increased by 70%. Implementing project-based excursions deepens students’ linguocultural and regional knowledge, develops independent research and teamwork skills, and facilitates the successful sociocultural adaptation of international students.
