Prosthetic rehabilitation of a postsurgical orbital defect with a customized silicone orbital prosthesis

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Orbital exenteration causes significant facial disfigurement and psychological impact. While various rehabilitation methods exist, simple and cost-effective prosthetic techniques are especially valuable in resource-limited settings.A lightweight silicone orbital prosthesis was made using a custom polyvinyl chloride (PVC) framework combined with a stock ocular prosthesis. After impressions and cast fabrication, a 2-mm PVC sheet was molded onto the final cast to support the wax pattern of the prosthesis. Clinical verification of the wax pattern and iris position was done before processing the prosthesis with heat-vulcanized silicone.Using a PVC framework and custom ocular prosthesis simplifies fabrication, lowers treatment time and cost, and offers adequate support with satisfactory esthetic results. This approach is practical when advanced implant-retained prostheses are unavailable. This simplified technique provides an economical, lightweight and esthetically acceptable solution for orbital rehabilitation, enhancing patient confidence and quality of life.
