Evaluating User Experience and Therapeutic Spatial Design in Southwestern Rehabilitation Centres: An Evidence-Based Architectural Assessment

Year: 2026

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Rehabilitation centres provide therapeutic environments that can influence patients’ recovery, well-being, and overall experience. However, inadequate integration of therapeutic architectural principles may limit their restorative potential. This study evaluates the therapeutic spatial design of selected purpose-built rehabilitation centres in Southwestern Nigeria. A descriptive and evaluative research design was adopted, using structured questionnaires, site observations, and photographic documentation. Data were obtained from 290 respondents across four rehabilitation centres: Oyo State Rehabilitation Centre, Ibadan; Cadam Rehabilitation Centre, Epe; OAU Teaching Hospital Rehabilitation Centre, Ile-Ife; and Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta. Findings showed that natural environment harmony, daylighting, and safety features recorded the highest ratings, while social spaces, recreational facilities, art integration, and patient-centred design recorded the lowest Physical Features Index scores. Mean PFI values ranged from 3.13 to 3.44, indicating moderate and uneven therapeutic performance. The study concludes that improved social spaces, art integration, patient-centred design, and systematic post-occupancy evaluation are needed to enhance therapeutic environments.
