Absorber approach for estimating marine CO2 removal efficiency: implementation and example workflows
Year: 2026
Type: book
Abstract: This software archive provides an implementation of the absorber approach for estimating marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) efficiency, accompanying the study “Global assessment of marine CO2 removal efficiency in the coastal ocean”. The approach combines Lagrangian particle trajectories with sampled ocean conditions to calculate the evolution of a remaining carbon deficit and the corresponding CO2 removal efficiency, accounting for mixed-layer depth, air–sea gas transfer, sea-ice effects, and a prescribed response coefficient. Four example workflows are included: a January global coastal release and a benchmark experiment using ACCESS-OM2-01, an ACCESS-OM2-1 experiment, and a January historical CESM2 experiment. The archive contains Python code, shell scripts, and PBS submission examples for particle-release preparation, tracking with OceanParcels, absorber post-processing, and NetCDF output generation. These are example implementations requiring external model inputs, model-specific software environments, and configuration of filesystem paths and computing resources; the forcing datasets and completed simulation outputs are not included.
