Fear of Missing Out and Phubbing in Young Adults: The Mediating Role of Social Media Addiction
Year: 2022
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: The present study tested whether social media addiction served as a mediator between the fear of missing out and phubbing in young adults. It was hypothesized that a) there would be a significant positive relationship between social media addiction, fear of missing out and phubbing, and b) social media addiction would mediate between phubbing behavior and the fear of missing out in young adults. Through a cross-sectional correlational research design, a sample of 150 young adults (n = 55 men, n = 95 women) with an age range of 20-35 years (M = 25.08, SD = 3.01) was recruited by using the non-probability convenient sampling technique. Data was collected online by sharing a Google Forms link with the potential participants. Results were generated through SPSS version 21 that showed a significant positive association between fear of missing out, social media addiction and phubbing. Moreover, social media addiction emerged as partial mediator for the fear of missing out and phubbing behaviour. These indigenous findings would have significant implications for the researchers, counsellors, and educational psychologists working across a variety of settings.
