Abstract: The theory of post-traumatic growth stems from research findings that report benefits of coping with traumatic stress. Although we know from history that people can develop and experience personal growth in times of suffering and severe distress, the majority of scientific literature has mainly investigated the potentially harmful consequences of traumatic stress. In recent decades, however, the potentially beneficial effects of post-traumatic stress have also started to be investigated and there are a growing number of authors who try to link the two approaches. The essence of post-traumatic growth is a profound restructuring of a person's life and the establishment of new psychological foundations or basic life assumptions, which allow a different life from the one before the traumatic experience. In this article, we first present the history of the development of the post-traumatic growth concept and the methodology for the assessment of post-traumatic growth, followed by a description of the dimensions or domains of post-traumatic growth that are common to all people. After describing the principles of psychotherapeutic work based on the post-traumatic growth-oriented approach, we defend the position of those who advocate the concurrent use of treatment-based approaches and the approaches based on the post-traumatic growth concept.
