Review of Bonnet (2027): Narrative in Political Discourse: Toward a Multimodal and Critical Approach
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Alma-Pierre Bonnet’s Narrative in Political Discourse: Toward a Multimodal and Critical Approach offers a systematic methodological framework for narrative analysis in political discourse. Drawing on eleven case studies across the UK, the US, and France, the book integrates multimodal analysis with critical narrative analysis to examine how linguistic, visual, and gestural resources coordinate in narrative construction. This review affirms the systematicity and transferability of its methodology, while noting that its claim to generalisability within non-Western democracies remains underexamined, and that its treatment of digital platforms does not fully engage with platform-specific interactivity and algorithmic mechanisms. Overall, the book provides a valuable analytical tool for research in political communication, discourse studies, and digital media.
