The Topos of Contested Price: Availability, Fracture and Kinetic Conflict in Import-Dependent Energy Markets
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: A contested energy market is not a noisy version of a single price. It is a site of delivery contexts on which price and availability are local sections that need not glue. This paper makes that claim precise. Delivery contexts — origin, route, instrument, tenor, insurance state — form a category. A Grothendieck topology records which families of contexts are jointly sufficient for a delivery. Price is a presheaf of values on that site; availability is a predicate valued in the subobject classifier of the topos of sheaves. In peacetime the sheaf condition holds and a benchmark is a global section. Under fracture it fails: each context has a price and a degree of availability, and no assignment is compatible with all of them at once. That is the sheaf-theoretic form of contextuality (Abramsky and Brandenburger 2011), read here as a market fact rather than a quantum one. Kinetic conflict is a change of topology, not a shock added to a fixed probability space: morphisms are deleted, sieves that covered cease to cover, and force majeure is a sieve that covers for the seller and not for the buyer. The 2026 closure of the Strait of Hormuz is the worked model. Crude retained more bypass morphisms than LNG and mean-reverted; LNG did not, and the long-term contract held on the price component while failing on the availability predicate. The correction protocol of the companion paper is effective descent: a cover by an alternative that can deliver, a storage leg, and a notice clause, with gluing data strong enough to produce a section. Patterned prices to end-2027 are restrictions of that section to three topologies, not a return to the pre-war global section. Companion to the discussion paper on continuous correction.
