Exploring the performance of an active magnetic refrigeration device using Ni₂MnSb: Monte Carlo and Ab initio calculations

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study focuses on Heusler alloys based on the Ni₂MnSb compound, which present a strong potential for magnetic refrigeration applications owing to their composition of low-cost and widely available elements. The magnetic, electronic, and structural properties of Ni₂MnSb were investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT). Magnetocaloric characteristics, including magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature variation, were computed through Monte Carlo simulations employing the Heisenberg Hamiltonian framework. Additionally, the energy balance equations for both the solid refrigerant (Ni₂MnSb) and the heat transfer fluid were applied to evaluate the performance of the Active Magnetic Regenerator (AMR) cycle, under a magnetic field strength of 1.5 T, a cycle frequency of 0.33 Hz, and a fluid mass flow rate of 0.025 kg/s. The obtained results were critically analyzed and benchmarked against Gadolinium to validate the effectiveness of the proposed material.
