Emotion Regulation in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Emotion regulation is a basic psychological process that plays a role in psychological adjustment, social functioning and mental well-being. Emotional regulation is a common problem that has been linked with emotional outbursts, anxiety, repetitive behaviour and social maladaptation among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This paper discusses the notion of emotion regulation and explores its role in Autism Spectrum Disorder. It discusses the scientific literature on emotion regulation impairments in people with ASD and examines factors that are associated with these difficulties such as psychiatric co-morbidities and atypical sensory and information processing. The paper stresses that these challenges are not due to one factor but are a result of a complex interplay of neurodevelopmental and psychological factors. Finally, the paper reviews the main strategies for enhancing emotion regulation skills in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, to improve adaptive functioning and quality of life.
