Digital Health Literacy: Empowering Patients in the Digital Age

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: : Digital health literacy (DHL) has emerged as a critical determinant of effective healthcare delivery in the 21st century, particularly in an era defined by the rapid advancement and widespread adoption of digital technologies. The integration of tools such as telemedicine platforms, mobile health (mHealth) applications, wearable health devices, and electronic health records (EHRs) has fundamentally transformed the way healthcare information is accessed, delivered, and utilized. As a result, patients are no longer passive recipients of care but active participants who must possess the necessary skills to search for, comprehend, evaluate, and apply digital health information in making informed decisions about their health and well-being. This growing reliance on digital ecosystems has amplified the importance of digital health literacy as a multidimensional construct that combines traditional health literacy with digital and information literacy competencies. This paper examines the concept of digital health literacy in depth, emphasizing its significance in enhancing patient empowerment, improving health outcomes, and fostering greater engagement in healthcare processes. It also identifies key challenges, including the digital divide, misinformation, limited access to technology, language barriers, and concerns related to privacy and data security, all of which hinder the effective utilization of digital health resources. Furthermore, the study proposes strategic interventions such as educational initiatives, user-friendly technological design, policy support, and collaborative efforts between healthcare providers and technology developers to strengthen digital health literacy across diverse populations.
