Le voyage merveilleux moderne dans En Patagonie de Bruce Chatwin : un cabinet de curiosités littéraire
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Discussing tales of marvelous travel at the end of the twentieth century may seem anachronistic. The marvelous, often associated with the tale, frequently appears marginalized within literary studies. Yet, if the contemporary world is no longer "new" but "late", certain travelers revisit the experience of wonder. Among them, Bruce Chatwin stands out: a voracious reader, indefatigable traveler, and art expert, he expresses his taste for wandering through his journeys to a thousand and one destinations. This article thus proposes a reading of In Patagonia as a literary cabinet of curiosities, intermingling narratives, histories, portraits, and heterogeneous objects. This metaphor illustrates an writing style that is simultaneously itinerant, narrative, and collector-like, constructing a singular vision of the world. The analysis demonstrates how the tension between reality and fiction generates the marvelous, transforming the work into a quest where one sets out in search of one thing only to discover a thousand others.
