The Stage-based waterlogging height optimization in evapotranspiration irrigation system (SIEVAPET) subsurface irrigation for curly lettuce under different soil–sand media

Abstract: This study aimed to optimize stage-based water table depth for lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cultivation under a subsurface evapotranspiration irrigation system. The research was motivated by lettuce’s high water demand and strong sensitivity to both water deficit and excessive saturation, which may induce root hypoxia. A controlled experiment was conducted by applying different water table depth treatments across growth stages, supported by root-zone moisture monitoring using sensors and/or tensiometers and irrigation scheduling based on crop evapotranspiration (ETc = ET0×Kc). The results indicate that stable water table control is essential to maintain near-optimal root-zone moisture under daily ET fluctuations. Vertical–horizontal moisture distribution patterns were strongly affected by soil–sand media composition, influencing moisture uniformity and deep percolation risks. Lettuce growth performance and fresh yield improved under optimal moisture thresholds but declined under deficit conditions or mild waterlogging. Overall, the findings confirm that integrating stage-based water table management with ET-based scheduling can enhance water use efficiency while sustaining productivity, provided that the trade-off between yield, WUE, and waterlogging risk is carefully managed.
