The Gyre and its collapse

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The Gyre and Its Collapse documents a studio-based investigation into the mechanics of rotational force, internal pressure, and structural rupture within abstract painting. Across a sequence of three acrylic-on-canvas works—The Gyre, Fault Line: Tectonic Gravity, and Fault Line: Epicentre—this working paper examines how physical paint application, palette-knife gestures, layering, and scraping function as generative mechanisms that build, compress, and ultimately disrupt visual fields. Rather than depicting external geological phenomena, the paintings trace an internal dynamic continuum—Rotation→Compression→Rupture—where systemic pressure accumulates to the point of material and structural collapse. This paper serves as primary studio research, recording the interplay between material behavior, process-driven abstraction, and formal tension.
