Abstract: ABSTRACT A simple mathematical model was developed to estimate moisture contents of dry dosage product packaged with desiccant during in‐use condition. The developed model was based on the mass balance of moisture linking package's water vapour transmission and linear moisture sorption isotherms equilibrated among the package headspace, product and desiccant. Firstly, the moisture prediction model was formulated for in‐package storage as function of a lumped water vapour transmission parameter and linear sorption isotherm parameters for any given package condition. Then for the in‐use storage where each dosage is taken out periodically, sequential summation of individual steps of package layer's moisture transmission and internal equilibration among the headspace, product and desiccant could build analytical solutions. The model was tested by two experimental packages of high‐density polyethylene bottle and low‐density polyethylene film bag, containing 60 and 30 dry dosage tablets, respectively, together with 1 g desiccant each, and then submitted to sequential table removal every day during the storage at 25°C and 85% relative humidity. The predicted moisture contents were in good agreement with experimental data with acceptable accuracy. The model would be useful for package design of dry dosage products to have optimal amount of desiccant for the required in‐use shelf life.
