Synergistic In vitro Antimicrobial and Phytochemical Analysis of Myristica fragrans and Syzygium aromaticum

Year: 2022
Type: article
Abstract: The present investigation was performed to investigate synergistic in vitro antimicrobial and phytochemical analyses of Myristica fragrans and Syzygium aromaticum. The agar well diffusion assay was used to investigate synergistic antimicrobial activity of Myristica fragrans and Syzygium aromaticum against four gram negative bacterial strains like Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoni. Results indicated larger zone of inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (21mm) in mixture (1:1) of nutmeg and clove extracts followed by individually Myristica fragrans seed extracts (16 mm) and Syzygium aromaticum buds extracts (19 mm) followed by benzene extracts. Moderate sensitivity was observed against P. mirabilis and K. pneumonae. E. coli was found least sensitive. The GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) analysis of methanolic extract of Myristica fragrans seed showed presence of Licarin B, Elemicine, Rhaphidecursinol B, 1,2,3-triphenyl-5-dimethylmethylene, Myristicine, Lowinox, Butanoic acid. Similarly GC-MS of methanolic extract of aromaticum buds confirmed presence of Eugenol Eugenyl acetate, Caryophyllene, Cyclohexanol, Carvacrol and Caryophyllene oxide in bud extract. The phytochemicals present in these spices are responsible for their antimicrobial properties.
