Green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles using Persea americana leaf extract for mosquito control and antibacterial activity
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study focuses on the green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using Persea americana leaf extract to control dengue vectors and selected human pathogens. GC-MS profiling revealed phytoconstituents responsible for stabilization and capping during CuO NPs formation. UV-Vis spectroscopy confirmed CuO NPs with a peak at 328 nm, while FTIR verified functional groups of the plant extract. XRD analysis indicated a crystalline structure with an average crystalline size of 58.7 nm. HR‑TEM and SEM images showed irregular, globular particles with smooth surfaces ranging from 50 to 65 nm, whereas dynamic light scattering revealed larger hydrodynamic diameters in suspension (~119.6 nm) due to capping molecules. Zeta potential values of −14.6 mV and EDX confirmed stability and elemental composition. The synthesized CuO NPs exhibited concentration‑dependent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . Mosquitocidal assays demonstrated significantly lower LC₅₀ and LD₅₀ values for CuO NPs compared to crude extract, and ovicidal tests achieved 100% inhibition of egg hatchability. Cytotoxicity assays revealed moderate toxicity (87.41 ± 0.67%) to human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells up to 100 µg/mL after 24 h of exposure. These findings suggest that green synthesized CuO NPs are promising eco‑friendly biopesticides with substantial biomedical potential, offering a dual role in integrated vector control and antimicrobial applications.
