Abstract: The production sector of synthetic textile fibers in the fashion industry causes environmental impacts from its conception to the use and maintenance of the pieces and the disposal of clothing and waste since the production process is polluting in large proportions. Using and cleaning the material, dumping microplastics into the environment, and incorrect disposal can cause environmental damage for a long time if we consider that synthetic fibers (especially polyester) originate from plastic, and it can take more than 100 years to decompose in nature. The present work makes a survey in the city of Itaituba – Pará about the production of clothes, consumption, and maintenance, as well as the generation, management, and disposal of waste derived from local textile production. Finally, it presents proposed solutions that encourage the replacement of synthetic fibers with natural fibers, also aiming at optimizing the use of natural fiber fabrics for the prevailing climate in the region, highlighting alternative materials to be used in the production process, as well as an educational media about the harmful impacts caused to the environment from this activity.
