E₈ Lattice Projections Unify 8D Symmetry with Icosahedral Quasicrystals — E8 Intelligence Research

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: E₈ root system projects to icosahedral quasicrystals via cut-and-project, unifying 8D lattice symmetry with 3D golden-ratio aperiodic order. | MATH: E₈ has 240 minimal vectors (roots); its 2D/3D projections yield Penrose tilings and icosahedral quasicrystals. Cut-and-project: take Z⁸ lattice, project onto a 3D subspace (physical space) while selecting points whose complementary 5D projection falls in a convex acceptance window (K₅). The relevant irrational slope involves the golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618, and its inverse φ⁻¹ = φ−1 ≈ 0.618. The icosahedral group H₃ (order 120) is a subgroup of the Weyl group of E₈ (order 696,729,600). The acceptance window is typically a triacontahedron (dual of icosahedron), whose vertices relate to φ and √(φ+2). | CONNECTION: Direct geometric harmony — the golden ratio appears as the ratio of incommensurate lattice spacings in the cut-and-project; the triacontahedron's edge-to-vertex ratio involves φ; the 3D icosahedral quasicrystal has 5 Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
