Large reductions in HIV services for key populations in sub-Saharan Africa
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In this issue of The Lancet Global Health, Henry Cust, Sungai T Chabata, and other unnamed collaborators1 report one of the first quantitative, real-world studies of abrupt and sustained cessation of the US Government funding for HIV services, primarily delivered to populations at highest risk of HIV acquisition—key populations—by four non-governmental organisations in Uganda and Zimbabwe. The interrupted time-series study used monthly and quarterly service-delivery data from the non-governmental organisations in the two countries from January, 2023 to March, 2026 to estimate the effects of the stop-work orders they received and subsequent funding cuts.
