Trends, challenges, and future directions of project-based learning in 21st century education: A systematic literature review

Year: 2026
Type: review
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Project-Based Learning (PjBL) is a learning model that develops 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and problem-solving. This study aims to systematically identify trends in PjBL research, the contexts of its application, examine the research methods used, explore implementation challenges, and investigate future directions for its development. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Articles were collected from the Scopus database using the keywords “Project-Based Learning (PjBL)” and “Science Education”. Following a selection process based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 50 articles published between 2020 and 2026 were selected for analysis. The research findings indicate that studies on PjBL have evolved over the past five years. Key research trends include STEM/STEAM-integrated PjBL, digital technology-based PjBL, Ethno-STEM and sustainability-based PjBL, virtual and hybrid PjBL, as well as research focusing on creativity, critical thinking and student engagement. The most dominant educational contexts are science and STEM education, followed by higher education, engineering education, vocational education, and health education. The experimental method is the most widely used research method, whilst other methods include mixed methods, qualitative research, bibliometric analysis, and systematic reviews. In practice, PjBL still faces various challenges, such as limited technological infrastructure, teacher readiness, the complexity of assessment, group dynamics, time constraints, and curriculum rigidity. The study’s findings also indicate that the future direction of PjBL development is moving towards the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), learning analytics, digital learning environments, industry-based projects, and sustainability-oriented learning. Furthermore, the Ethno-STEM approach offers opportunities to enhance contextual learning whilst strengthening learners’ cultural identity. Overall, the findings of this research confirm that PjBL is an innovative and adaptive learning model that continues to evolve to meet the demands of global education. Through the integration of technology, multidisciplinary collaboration, and contextual learning experiences, PjBL has the potential to become a key pedagogical framework in preparing students to face the challenges of the 21st century.
