Abstract: ABSTRACT . The role of genetically modified (GM) crops in providing food security has been a matter of debate and receiving both criticism and support all over the world from the different communities, scientists, farmers, leaders of governments. The ever-increasing human population which is expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050, would exert a tremendous pressure on natural resources, including water and arable land for increased crop production to meet the growing demand. Currently in the world, more than 900 million people are undernourished, out of which more than 237.7 million are in African continent. This is more so in case of Ethiopia as its .population is expected to escalate to 139, 620,000 and 190, 870,000 in 2030 and 2050, respectively. In such a context, GM crops may contribute substantially to increase food production, its quality and nutrient composition. Moreover, growing GM crops may also influence farmers’ income by decreasing input on pests control and fertilizers. Thus, this paper provides the first analysis of GM crops and their food security impacts at the micro level particularly among small holders farmers in pastoral areas like afar. It is concluded that GM crops alone will not solve the hunger problem, but they can be an important component to form a feasible policy and strategy to ensure food security in Afar, Ethiopia
