Solid-State Transformer Based Energy Routing Architecture for Next-Generation Smart Distribution Networks

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Emerging complexity in modern intelligent smart distribution networks is brought about by extensive integration in renewable energy resources, distributed generation units with energy storage systems and smart loads. The traditional low-frequency transformers that are typically employed in the traditional power distribution systems cannot accommodate the bilateral flow of power, real-time voltage regulation, and adjustable power path that are needed in the new smart grids. In order to overcome these shortcomings, this paper is a proposal on Solid-State Transformer (SST)-based energy-routing architecture of the next-generation smart distribution networks. The suggested system employs a SST system topology that is multi-stage based including an AC- DC rectifier stage, and high-frequency DC- DC isolation stage, and a DC-AC inverter stage that allow efficient conversion of power, voltage regulation and increased controllability. In order to realise smart management of power flows and quick dynamic reaction, the SST control structure is enhanced with a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy. The MPC controller makes future predictions of states in a system and optimises the switching to achieve an optimal voltage control, reduce power loss and energy routing in distributed energy resources and loads. The suggested architecture is analysed using simulation experiments in Mat lab/ Simulink environment with different load and operating conditions. Experiments in performance show that there are increased power conversion efficiency, voltage regulation, total harmonic distortion, and system response time as compared to traditional distribution systems based on transformers only. The findings indicate the usefulness of the SST-based architecture to facilitate the dynamic, effective, and smart power management in the present day smart grids. Thus, the offered framework would give the future development of smart distribution infrastructure with improved reliability, efficiency, and flexibility.
