The Effect of Peer Assessment on the Development of Writing Competence in Higher Education

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT: Peer assessment has become an increasingly popular instructional strategy in higher education. It allows students to evaluate each other’s written work and provide constructive feedback. This study examines the impact of peer assessment on the development of writing competence among university students. The article discusses how peer assessment promotes critical thinking, learner autonomy, and awareness of writing conventions. Through reviewing previous research, the study demonstrates that students who regularly participate in peer-review activities often show improvement in grammar, organization, coherence, and overall writing quality. The findings suggest that peer assessment not only enhances writing skills but also increases students’ confidence and engagement in the learning process. Therefore, integrating peer assessment into writing courses can contribute significantly to the development of academic writing competence.
