Type: article
Abstract: Timely transmission of plant physiological conditions is of importance in adaptative decision-making in precision farming and environmental inspection. This paper creates an intelligent communication network built on the Internet of Things (IoT) that incorporates the Farquharvon CaemmererBerry (FvCB) photosynthesis model and real time sensor equipment in estimating and transmitting plant photosynthetic efficiency under different environmental conditions. The system architecture is a combination of embedded temperature, light intensity, and CO2 concentration sensors with an edge-based computing processor that produces the FvCB algorithm. The information is sent wirelessly to a cloud-based environment where artificial intelligence (AI) models process the data patterns and produce interpretable feedback messages to end-users via multilingual communication interface. Field experiments with wheat and soybean crops showed that the proposed system was precise at the estimation of the photosynthetic rate (R2 = 0.92) and effective at conveying stress signals, so that the unfavorable environmental conditions could be identified early. The combination with a mobile dashboard offered dynamic visualization and automatic control recommendations to the users. The smart communication system is the link between plant physiology, IoT, and AI to improve situational awareness and provide farmers with the opportunity to make smart decisions about managing crops in the most efficient way. The article is a major development in intelligent agricultural communication systems, which enables plants to communicate by means of data driven interpretation to make sustainable and informed decisions.
