Wireless Power Transfer Systems for EV Charging: Challenges and Opportunities

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) systems are rapidly emerging as a transformative solution for electric vehicle (EV) charging, offering enhanced convenience, reduced mechanical wear, and greater automation compared to conventional plug-in methods. This paper explores the fundamental principles, key components, and recent advancements in WPT technologies, particularly focusing on inductive and resonant coupling techniques. It identifies critical challenges, including electromagnetic interference, alignment sensitivity, system efficiency, safety concerns, and standardization issues, that currently hinder widespread deployment. Furthermore, the paper highlights emerging opportunities such as dynamic charging, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration, and smart grid connectivity that could redefine the EV charging landscape. Through a comprehensive review of current technologies and an analysis of future prospects, this work provides insights into the feasibility and scalability of WPT systems as a sustainable charging infrastructure for electric mobility.
