Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Literacy has become one of the big issues in education in Indonesia. At one elementary school in Prambanan, SD Negeri Sumberwatu, reading literacy has become an essential component in fostering critical thinking skills and shaping children’s educational futures. In this school, problems like low reading motivation and restricted access to suitable reading materials continue to exist. This community service program aimed at promoting a reading culture by incorporating an Extensive Reading strategy and recruiting students at the English Language Education Department as Reading Buddies. Five workshops made up the program, which was concluded with an activity entitled “Read and Shine: Little Voices, Big Stories.” The findings demonstrated that students' enthusiasm was high and that their interest in reading had grown as a result of their positive interactions with books and reading companions. In order to create a sustainable reading ecosystem, the researchers suggest that the school continue the program by making use of the teachers as a role model in reading as well as invite nearby literacy communities to collaborate.
