What sixty studies of V2O5 supercapacitor electrodes can and cannot tell us: a validated dataset with study-grouped analysis

Abstract: Vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) is one of the most studied electrode materials for supercapacitors. Hundreds of studies report its specific capacitance, but it is not clear whether these data can be combined to predict the performance of a new electrode. To examine this, 974 records from 60 published studies were collected into one dataset, and each record was linked to its source. Within each study, the data behave as expected. Capacitance decreases as the charge-discharge rate increases, and this decrease is well described by a simple power law. Adding a composite partner or a dopant raises the capacitance by about 1.6 times compared with pure V 2 O 5 tested in the same study. Between studies, however, the picture is different. The median capacitance reported for pure V 2 O 5 differs up to 27 times from one study to another. A model trained on some studies could not predict the values reported in others (R 2 = 0.11), although a random split of the same data suggested good accuracy (R 2 = 0.76). One likely reason is that key electrode details, such as mass loading and active mass, are reported for only about one fifth of the records. A short list of details that future studies should report is proposed. The dataset and scripts are openly available.
