Analysis of Dimensions Affecting the Resilience of Residential Complexes in Deteriorated Urban Fabrics: A Case Study of Sanandaj

Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the dimensions affecting the resilience of residential complexes in the deteriorated urban fabrics of Sanandaj and to determine the effects of social, institutional–managerial, economic, and physical–environmental dimensions on residential resilience. This applied study employed a quantitative descriptive–analytical design. The statistical population consisted of residents of residential complexes and housing units located in the deteriorated urban fabrics of Sanandaj. A total of 395 residents were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using a researcher-developed questionnaire covering the physical–environmental, social, economic, institutional–managerial, and resilience constructs. Content validity was assessed by experts, while construct, convergent, and discriminant validity were examined through measurement-model evaluation. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and composite reliability. Data were analyzed using SPSS and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) in SmartPLS. Structural model analysis showed that the social dimension had a positive and significant effect on resilience (β=0.376, t=5.081, P<0.001). Significant positive effects were also observed for the institutional–managerial dimension (β=0.331, t=4.662, P<0.001), economic dimension (β=0.284, t=4.239, P<0.001), and physical–environmental dimension (β=0.219, t=3.712, P<0.001). The social dimension was the strongest predictor, whereas the physical–environmental dimension showed the smallest path coefficient. The coefficient of determination was R²=0.486, indicating that the four dimensions jointly explained 48.6% of the variance in resilience. Moreover, Q²=0.318 demonstrated satisfactory predictive relevance of the model. The resilience of residential complexes in the deteriorated urban fabrics of Sanandaj is a multidimensional construct jointly shaped by social, institutional–managerial, economic, and physical–environmental factors. The dominant role of the social dimension highlights the importance of strengthening social capital, neighborhood participation, and community relationships alongside institutional capacity and economic support. Nevertheless, the relatively unfavorable condition of the physical–environmental dimension indicates that structural rehabilitation, infrastructure improvement, and enhancement of urban form should remain major priorities for achieving sustainable resilience.
