Children with arthritis: orphans of the NCD agenda?
Year: 2026
Type: editorial
Abstract: Musculoskeletal conditions, including forms of inflammatory arthritis such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and axial spondyloarthritis, are leading causes of disability-adjusted life-years globally. In 2020, 17·6 million people were estimated to have rheumatoid arthritis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis affected more than 2 million children worldwide. These conditions present a substantial threat to healthy ageing, causing chronic pain, limiting mobility and reducing participation in education and employment.
