العموم في منظومة حرز الأماني ووجه التهاني: دراسة في الآليات والتوظيف: Generality in the Poetic System of Ḥirz al-Amānī wa Wajh al-Tahānī: A Study of Its Mechanisms and Applications

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the mechanisms and methodological devices al-Shāṭibī employs in his renowned didactic poem, Ḥirz al-Amānī wa Wajh al-Tahānī, to show the general applicability of a ruling across multiple instances in Qur’anic readings (qirāʾāt), moving beyond the mere transmission of variant readings toward a systematic process of rule formation. The research addresses a significant scholarly gap: the absence of a comprehensive foundational study that brings together these dispersed mechanisms, which are primarily discussed in commentaries on al-Shāṭibiyyah. This gap may hinder researchers from identifying instances in which a ruling is intended to extend beyond the explicitly stated wording to analogous Qur’anic occurrences. The study therefore investigates the linguistic and symbolic mechanisms through which al-Shāṭibī conveys such generality and assesses their methodological and practical significance. It aims to identify and classify these mechanisms and demonstrate their applicability in deriving comprehensive rulings and extending them to analogous Qur’anic instances, particularly where the poet remains silent about specific occurrences while implicitly incorporating them under a broader rule. Methodologically, the study adopts an integrated approach: an inductive method is employed to trace relevant passages in the farsh al-ḥurūf sections of the commentaries on al-Shāṭibiyyah; an analytical method is used to examine the linguistic implications of the identified mechanisms; and a comparative method is applied to assess the inferred meanings against the interpretations and conclusions established by the major commentators of al-Shāṭibiyyah. The study shows that al-Shāṭibī used a clear inductive, rule-based methodology rather than merely enumerating variant readings. His poem incorporates a range of mechanisms that indicate the general applicability of a given reading rule to all relevant analogous instances. The study thus highlights a distinctive dimension of al-Shāṭibī’s scholarly method and demonstrates the methodological sophistication underlying the formulation and organisation of Qur’anic reading rules in Ḥirz al-Amānī wa Wajh al-Tahānī.
