Between hope and despair. Parents experiences with prenatal diagnostics : A qualitative meta-synthesis

Year: 2026
Type: dissertation
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Background: There has been significant development in prenatal diagnostics over the last decade. Prenatal diagnostics enable the detection of chromosomal abnormalities, malformations, genetic diseases, and non-viable pregnancies at an early stage. The positive aspects of prenatal diagnostics are that certain measures can be prepared and planned during pregnancy, which may reduce suffering and provide support for both the fetus and the family. Aim: The purpose of this qualitative meta-synthesis is to shed light on parents’ experiences with prenatal diagnostics. Methods: A qualitative meta-synthesis with a meta-ethnographic design and thematic analysis was conducted. The databases used were CINAHL and PubMed. Results: The synthesis resulted in five themes: Seeking understanding in a situation characterized by uncertainty; Managing uncertainty and seeking control; Bearing the responsibility for a life-altering decision; Living with anxiety and uncertainty; Seeking support in a challenging situation. Parents reactions to abnormal prenatal results included grief, anxiety, and worry. The healthcare systems way of providing information about abnormalities and treatment options was often perceived as inadequate. Stress related to making quick decisions about further investigations and the possible termination of pregnancy could paralyze the parents. Conclusion: Knowledge and support were identified as crucial factors, as were how the care was perceived and the quality of the information provided. Access to the right resources, together with parents’ belief in themselves and their ability to handle the new situation, could strengthen them during the process. Clinical implications: The results may contribute to increased knowledge among midwives and other healthcare professionals, helping them reduce anxiety and stress when supporting families.
