How Technological Capability Accumulation Reshapes Industrial Competitiveness
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between innovation, research and development (R&D), technological transformation, and industrial competitiveness in an environment characterized by rapid technological and organizational change. The literature reviewed shows that competitiveness increasingly depends on firms’ capacity to accumulate technological knowledge, absorb external information, protect and commercialize intellectual property, and transform research expenditure into sustained productivity improvements. The paper also considers the effects of Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, robotics, digital platforms, FinTech, and blockchain on industrial performance, emphasizing that technological adoption generates stronger results when supported by adequate organizational capabilities, skills, data resources, and managerial practices. A further dimension concerns the increasing integration of environmental sustainability with industrial strategy through green innovation, digital supply chains, servitization, and resilience-oriented production systems. The literature indicates that these transformations are influenced by institutional conditions, industrial policies, competitive pressures, and innovation ecosystems. Overall, the paper argues that contemporary industrial competitiveness cannot be explained by technological investment alone. It results from interactions among R&D, organizational capabilities, external knowledge, human capital, digital transformation, sustainability strategies, institutional quality, and the capacity of firms to commercialize and operationalize technological advances.
