Islamic Social and Impact Financing: Jurisprudential Foundations, Funding Elicitation and Long-Term Sustainability. Volume II: Instruments, Mechanisms and Technology-Enabled Continuity
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper continues the KSCCN series on technology adoption in Islamic finance. Volume I examined epistemological dissonance with Keynesian protocols and instrument-based innovation. Volume II turns to the social and impact financing layer grounded in Islamic jurisprudence, focusing on how resources are elicited and how continuity is secured. 1. Purpose and scope Islamic social finance comprises the mandatory and voluntary instruments of redistribution and endowment (zakat, waqf, sadaqah, qard hasan, ushr and related forms) that operate under the objectives of the Shariah (maqasid). Impact financing, in this context, denotes the deliberate direction of those instruments toward measurable social, economic or environmental outcomes while preserving the substance requirements of ownership, residual risk and prohibition of riba and excessive gharar. The paper addresses two operational questions: how funding is elicited at scale, and how long-term sustainability of both the corpus and the impact is secured.
