The Administrative Sublime: Institutional Horror, Necropolitical Governance, and the Ballardian Imagination in Thomas L. Vaultonburg's Necromancers Don't Read Toe Tags Copy title
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This satirical work of literary criticism examines institutional horror, bureaucratic authority, and the manufacture of moral legitimacy in J. G. Ballard's High-Rise (1975), Cocaine Nights (1996), Super-Cannes (2000), and Millennium People (2003), alongside Thomas L. Vaultonburg's 2026 supernatural novel Necromancers Don't Read Toe Tags. Through comparative close reading, the essay explores the relationship between institutional benevolence and systemic wrongdoing, examining how cultural organizations, philanthropic institutions, and administrative structures can transform ethical responsibility into a matter of reputation management. The essay introduces the concept of the "administrative sublime" to describe systems so proficient in processing complaints that responsibility itself becomes difficult to locate. Presented through the fictional academic persona Dr. Adrian Vale of the equally fictional Institute for Applied Thanatological Studies, this work combines substantive literary analysis with metafictional satire of academic authority and institutional legitimacy. It is not a peer-reviewed publication. Novel: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GFQ56LTK Author website: https://www.thomaslvaultonburg.com
