Schrödinger's USB: A Phenomenological Investigation of Orientation Uncertainty, Observer-Induced Failure, and the Three-Attempt Principle in Universal Serial Bus Connectivity
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: A satirical methods paper that gives the familiar USB three-try joke a formally specified classical explanation. Under the narrated sequence, a plug fails, is flipped, fails again, and succeeds after returning to its original orientation. The paper proves that a fixed deterministic orientation-only success function cannot generate this sequence, then constructs a classical witness using one additional binary eligibility variable. An independent-alignment model yields P(N = 3) = p(1-p)/2 and E[N] = 2/p - 1/2 under explicitly stated assumptions. The USB Hostility Constant H = 3/2 is introduced as a humorous descriptive ratio, not a physical constant. Quantum Peripheral Irritation, observer-induced connector hostility, and fourth-dimensional ports are expressly fictional. The deposit includes a five-page paper, editable Markdown, PDF build source, an executable Python checker, retained verification results, citation metadata, and SHA-256 checksums. The checks exhaust all four Boolean orientation-only functions and 32 classical hidden-state assignments, and check selected rational probability cases exactly. All cases are synthetic. No hardware study, quantum observation, proof-assistant verification, or empirical success rate is claimed.
