Recent advances in Label-Free plasmonic Biosensors: Focus on metal chalcogenides and ferroelectric oxides for biomedical and environmental applications

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Label-free surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors have become one of the most powerful platforms for real-time and high-sensitivity detection in biomedical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. We review the state of art of recent developments in SPR sensor design efforts based on copper gallium sulfide (CuGaS 2 ), mercury gallium sulfide (HgGa 2 S 4 ), as well as ferroelectric materials like potassium tantalate (KTaO 3 ) and lithium tantalate (LiTaO 3 ). We investigate their plasmonic properties and sensor architecture, as well as detection performance for analytes including urea and deltamethrin. These recent developments of novel materials in combination with SPR platforms can improve sensitivity, selectivity and stability when working with complex sample matrices. In addition, this review explains the relevant physical principles and fabrication techniques as well as powerful applications of next-generation SPR biosensors, as well as outlining current challenges and future perspectives.
