The Semiotic Breach

Abstract: For decades, the discourse surrounding drug-resistant pathogens has been imprisoned within the crude vocabulary of warfare. We speak endlessly of miracle drugs, frontline defenses, last-resort armaments, and pathogenic enemies laying siege to human health. This militaristic conceit is not merely a poetic flourish; it is a fundamental cognitive error that obscures the biological reality of microbial systems. Bacteria are not hostile combatants invading an alien territory; they are the baseline architects of Earth's biogeochemical machinery. When we introduce concentrated synthetic molecules to eliminate them, we are not waging war—we are writing software updates for a planetary biological network that reads chemical interventions as raw data.
